HADDONFIELD MONTHLY

QUERY #11 ‐ STEWARDSHIP OF RESOURCES

For individuals:

Flowers for Peace:

In the middle of May, probably on the Sunday of Covered Dish, marigold plants will be available in the foyer.  Each plant will contain a marker citing a specific peace intention.  Meeting members are encouraged to take home a few plants, noting the intention of their plants and calling these intentions to mind each time they notice the flowers in their garden.  The plants were started from seed at the Peace Prayers gathering on March 20th.  Enjoy!

The Tempest”

Collingswood Shakespeare will be performing “The Tempest” on May 21, 22, 23, 28, 29 & 30. One of the Bard’s most loved comedies, this play features a cast of zany characters shipwrecked on a deserted island. This production will feature modern music and comic references and will be lighthearted and suitable for all ages!! As always, one half of the proceeds will benefit the Education Fund.

PYM Annual Fund Campaign

Philadelphia Yearly Meeting’s Annual Fund Campaign ends June 30 which is nearer than you think. PYM is a most important resource for Haverford Monthly Meeting, providing educational programs and materials for our children and teens, help with property issues, conflict resolution, counseling services, services for the aging, as well as many others. It also provides support for the various standing committees such as Worship & Care, Peace & Concerns, Education, and Support & Outreach. Notice the numerous activities listed in the PYM Newsletter, many of which are included in HMM’s monthly bulletin.

HMM has a monetary covenant with PYM along with the other member meetings. However, PYM is also dependant upon contributions from its members and attenders which means you and me. So far this year too many of us have not given. It is really easy to do – visit www.pym.org and click on the button “Donate Now” on the right side. You can also arrange to donate by monthly payments or send a check by mail. But most of all it is important to be mindful of the need.

PYM Peace & Concerns Annual Event: Join with two new PYM working groups, Eco-Justice WG and Heeding God’s Call WG to discover how to be the change we need to be! The Eco-Justice Working Group was formed to discern, embody, and share a prophetic vision of right relationship and to call on Philadelphia Yearly Meeting to bring it forth. Join in dynamic discernment; spirit-led planning and action as PYM Friends respond to the vital needs of our planet and its people. This will be an occasion to learn what other Friends are doing, identify our most potentially powerful strategies, and discover things you can do as an individual and as part of newly forming coalitions. The meeting will be held at the Burlington Meeting House (NJ) on Saturday, May 15, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. For more information, contact Patricia Finely, Clerk (P& C SC) at: at 215-204-5736; finleyp@temple.edu.

We Can Do It! Day – Quaker Quest Style: This session is subtitled “Taking A Look At Your Meeting Through The Eyes Of A Visitor.” It will be held Saturday, May 22 (9 AM – 4 PM) at Arch Street Meeting House (4th & Arch Sts, Philadelphia.). Topics include: Nurturing Visitors, Meeting for Worship and Vocal Ministry, Nurturing and Including Youth and Young Friends in the Meeting's fabric, Local Meeting Promotional Methods, Ways of Attracting Friends School's Young Families to the Sponsoring Monthly Meeting, Enhancing Adult Religious Education Programs, Developing Strong First Day School Programs and Operations, Panel report from 4 Quaker Quest Meetings. For more information, contact Lois and Harry Forrest, callighrf@medleas.com or 609-654-3673.

Summer Peace Camp at Gwynedd Friends: From August 9th to August 27th, 2010, children attending the Peace Camp at Gwynedd Friends will explore their own understandings of peace and imaginatively delve into the world of conflict transformation. They will learn of ways to respect the world beyond their horizon, and to care for the world within their reach. Most importantly, each child will be encouraged to realize his or her own significance and responsibility; and each will be provided with the skills and resources needed to express his or her own creative designs for a more peaceful world. Social realities might not change themselves, but collective imaginations certainly can... and have for seven years running; just add sun, friends and some positive instruction and a handful of curious challenges. For more information about this unique and innovative summer camp including a brochure and registration form, please visit www.gwyneddfriends.org/peacecamp. With specific questions, please contact 215.699.3055 or send a message to gwyneddpeacecamp@yahoo.com

New Website for Aging Resources: To assist Friends, Meetings and caregivers in navigating the journey of aging, Philadelphia Yearly Meeting and New York Yearly Meeting initiated a collaborative project, Quaker Aging Resources. Staff members from both Yearly Meetings are researching, gathering, reviewing, and creating resource materials to help Friends support one another through life’s changes. The website, www.quakeragingresources.org reflects Friend’s testimonies. The website, programs and materials will address age-related and other challenges that may require renewed perspective, and also offer opportunities for spiritual growth. These resources are intended to support people growing into later adulthood; in particular people who have physical, emotional or other challenges; caregivers, families and Friends Meetings, in a way that is both practical and inspirational, and presented through a lens of Quakerism. The website is expected to launch in mid-May, 2010 and will continue to evolve. For more information, contact George Schaefer, Care and Aging Coordinator, 215-241-7068 georges@pym.org or Tricia Coscia, Aging Resource Coordinator, 215-241-7017 triciac@pym.org

What is Poetry?

Poetry is… rhythm…repetition…rhyme…alliteration

words and sounds…

arranged like flowers in a vase…

or choreographed…

to dance on a page.

Poetry is… emotion……

happiness and human love…

or heartbreak and regret…

hero’s stories…

nature’s glories.

Poetry is… imagination…

wonder and delight…

tiny insects with faerie wings,

stars held up by invisible strings.

Poetry is… layers of meaning

hidden in rhymes…

messages in metaphor…

eternity…

or a moment…

caught between the lines.
