Opportunities for Teens & Young Adults

of the Religious Society of Friends

One December, a father and his daughter stopped by the office looking for summer opportunities for his daughter to take part in. I allowed as how this was admirable that they were starting so early. He replied that his mother had always said "You should start making plans for summer when the first snow flies." Hmmmm, maybe that's why the seed & gardening catalogues arrive around Christmas.

We make most of the really momentous decisions in our lives one-millimeter at a time: one small decision after another until the outcome is a foregone decision. I propose that you make a decision that is conscious and deliberate and life changing. Choose things to do that could change your life. Here are some suggestions that could be a starting point.

This list starts with Volunteer Opportunities.  If you are looking for an internship, many "volunteer sites" offer paid internships and many "employment sites" also offer internships so look on both pages..

You can contribute to this list. The organizations must have programs that accept high school age young people or young adults under 21. I would prefer that they be organizations that you have had some experience with and can personally recommend.

Camps for High School Age Young People

Friends Music Camp , Olney Friends School, Yellow Springs, OH
Campers at Friends Music Camp are young people between the ages of 10 and 18, of any religion, who wish to pursue musical excellence while participating in a caring community.
Teaching staff come from many different backgrounds. Some are established professionals, and others are graduate students at some of the most highly regarded music schools in the nation. All are experienced, caring teachers, passionate about making FMC a positive experience for all our campers.
Counselors are often musicians as well. Many are former campers, returning to help share the FMC experience with the next generation.

Stone Mountain Adventures, Huntingdon, PA ( Central Pennsylvania).
Located in the heart of Central Pennsylvania’s farm country, Stone Mountain Adventures offers individuals the opportunity to challenge themselves to step beyond their own abilities: to ride with confidence, to climb with technique, to control the sail, to bike one more hill.
With only 60 campers ages 12-16 and an active, caring staff of 14, we share the summer’s adventrues in an environment of respect and sharing; celebrating our victories, accepting our shortcomings, learning, and having fun together.

Teen Adventure Camp,  Camp Dark Waters Medford, NJ   For 15 and 16 year olds who want a challenge, this two week trip requires determination, teamwork, and a love of the outdoors. Explore with your team and experienced guides while learning new skills and pushing your physical limits. The classic Camp Dark Waters community - with tougher terrain.
Camp Dark Waters is our base camp on this trip – we stop in once or twice during our two weeks together – otherwise we’re moving non-stop from one adventure to the next. One day we’ll be rafting down the Lehigh River, and the next we’ll be hiking up the Appalachian Mountains! The trip itinerary includes virtually every outdoor pursuit that the NY-VA corridor has to offer… plus a few you’ve probably never even imagined. The end result? An epic trip that blows any other trips out of the water!

USA Gap Year Fair

A Gap Year is a period of time between completing high school and beginning college when a student takes one year to step outside the traditional classroom to explore the world, reflect on their personal values and goals, and prepare to take the next purposeful step in life. Some programs are domestic while others are international, some are for short periods of time and others for the entire year, some are free and others have tuition, but by and large it is evident that students benefit from the experience.

USA Gap Year Fairs is a national circuit of events that brings together reputable Gap Year organizations, interested students and parents, high school college counselors and the Gap Year experts. These events are designed to provide students with a broad exposure of Gap Year Programs and the opportunity for face to face conversations with the people who work in the field. For students and parents interested in Gap Year, these fairs are the legitimate source to connect with reputable organizations that focus on Education, Service and Personal Growth.    Check their schedule for other dates & locations in the fall & winter.

You can also view descriptions of 29 Gap Year programs with links to their websites for more information.

Drexel University College of Medicine’s new Mini-Medical School is a landmark community education program. We are the first medical school in the Philadelphia region to offer this type of program to the community. The program is intended to help improve the community’s understanding of the field of medicine while helping Drexel University College of Medicine doctors interact more personally with community members. Through this exchange and shared learning, it is our hope to make our community a healthier place to live. This is our goal - but what is Mini-Medical School?

Mini-Medical School offers five distinctly different medical education programs. All programs are open to community members interested in expanding their medical knowledge.

Mini-Med Summer Camp® is a unique, 5- week program open to academically gifted high school students with an interest in pursuing a career as a physician. This program will expose the students to clinical, didactic and research aspects of medicine.

Mini-Med Spring Break is a one-week program open to college students anticipating medical school. The participant will experience a medical education as seen through the eyes of 3rd- and 4th-year medical students during their clinical rotations in the hospital and clinical practices.

Mini-Med Doc for a Day is a fantastic opportunity to live out your dream. Open to the adult who is looking to experience a the day-in-the- physician's life.

Mini-Med Evening School meets one night a week for six weeks. Each session is hosted by a different community group interested in learning the latest medical advances and how to better understand their own medical care. Each class focuses on one of the latest medical treatments in patient care. Open discussion, dialogue and lively exchanges between students and faculty are integral parts of each session. This is your chance to ask the medical questions you’ve always wanted to ask.

National Council of Churches Ecumenical Work Week "Here until the work is done"
Gulfport and New Orleans, July 31-August 6, 2011

The National Council of Churches Special Commission for the Just Rebuilding of the Gulf Coast has scheduled the annual Ecumenical Work Week in Gulfport and New Orleans.

The work week, which has been growing steadily since it began in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, is expected to attract more than 100 volunteers who will spend a week working on houses still needing repair since the hurricane's devastation. As in past years, their labors will take place in an atmosphere of worship and witness.

Volunteers will choose to work in either New Orleans or Gulfport, Miss. They can download a registration form and return it along with a $25 per person registration fee to the NCC's Washington Office, 110 Maryland Avenue, NE, Suite 108, Washington, DC 20002.

Volunteers will be asked to provide their own transportation to and from New Orleans of Gulfport. Assistance with housing will be provided by the Ecumenical Work Week staff.

Additional information Registration forms can be found at the National Council of Churches Special Commission Web site

Read their whole site before applying.  Their expectation is that you are coming as part of a group (from your Meeting, Quarterly Meeting??), and that you will pay for your own room and board.  Youth groups must include an appropriate ratio of 1 adult advisor for every 4 youth of each gender. Read their Frequently asked questions

If you get a error page or last years information. This event happens every year but they seem to change the webpage address and leave the old page up like a ghost ship.  Go to National Council of Churches home page. scroll down to the bottom and click the e-mail for the Web Editor.  Ask for the new page address.

Passport in Time logo

  Welcome to Passport in Time!
Passport in Time (PIT) is a volunteer archaeology and historic preservation program of the USDA Forest Service (FS). We invite you to work with professional archaeologists and historians on projects including archaeological excavation, rock art restoration, survey, archival research, historic structure restoration, gathering oral histories, or writing interpretive brochures. That’s just a small sample!

Volunteers have helped stabilize ancient cliff dwellings in New Mexico, excavate a 10,000-year-old village site in Minnesota, restore a historic lookout tower in Oregon, clean vandalized rock art in Colorado, survey for sites in a rugged Montana wilderness, and excavate a 19th-century Chinese mining site in Hell’s Canyon in Idaho.

These are real, ongoing research and management projects for which the Forest Service is responsible on national forests, grasslands, and prairies. The Forest Service professional staff of archaeologists and historians will be your hosts, guides, and coworkers.

Because Passport in Time is a volunteer program, there is no fee to participate. However you must get yourself to the project and sometimes provide your own food and lodging. Many projects involve back country camping where volunteers are responsible for their own food and gear. Others offer meals prepared by a camp cook, often for a small fee. Still others provide hookups for RVs, or volunteers may stay at local hotels and travel to the site each day. The projects vary in length from two days to two weeks or even longer if you’re having too much fun to leave! A Minimum age is listed for each project.  Often it appears as follows "15 years old; under 18 with a responsible adult."  For more information   http://passportintime.com/

Join a Habitat for Humanity Global Village trip and experience another culture while making a difference in the lives of others. As a Global Village volunteer, you will work alongside members of the host community in building decent, affordable housing. I have done this 3 times. San Cristobal, Chiapas, Mexico; Coban, Guatemala; and San Juan Ostuncalco, Guatemala. They were life changing experiences for me. I highly recomend the Global Village programs! People under 18 can go if accompanied by a parent.   - Cookie

Locally there are volunteer opportunities with the1883 barkentine Gazela Primeiro , and with the 1902 tugboat Jupiter in Philadelphia. The non-profit Philadelphia Ship Preservation Guild has now embarked on one of the most ambitious projects in its history. As the owner and operator of the historic barkentine Gazela, the Guild is now in the process of replacing the entire deck and waterways of this hundred year-old 177 foot tall ship. Crewing Aboard the Barkentine Gazela and the Tug Jupiter. Unlike most other tall and historic ships, Gazela and Jupiter are sailed by the people who preserve them. There are no Naval or Coast Guard cadets, and no paying trainees. The crew consists entirely of hard-working, enthusiastic volunteers, members of the Phildalephia Ship Preservation Guild who have put a lot of effort into maintaining the ships. The basic theory behind Gazela's and Jupiter's crews is that anyone is welcome if they are willing to contribute to the vessel's mission.  http://www.gazela.org

The Appalachian Mountain Club http://www.outdoors.org. The Appalachian Trail exists due to the tireless efforts of the local clubs charged with the Trail's maintenance. Nature is constantly trying to take the Trail back as weeds grow up along the sides of the path, limbs and whole trees are dropped across the Trail by storms, and erosion constantly wears at the soil. Individual trail maintainers adopt sections of the trail to care for and the clubs themselves work as a group to keep the trail clear, build shelters, and relocate the trail when needed. Most of the clubs listed here also sponsor workshops, hikes along the Trail, and more.
